IPL Cricket in South Africa
The Proteas team was born in 1991 when Cricket in South Africa made its debut and they have managed to become one of the most successful brand names in the cricket world. Their achievements are very impressive; being the No. 1 ODI team and the No. 2 ranked Test team. If it wasn’t for the Australian team, currently regarded as one of the greatest teams in history, then the Proteas could have reigned in the No. 1 Test spot. The Proteas have qualified for the semi-finals 3 times and the quarter-finals once in the 5 World Cups in which they competed, proving time and time again that consistency plays an integral factor in their continued success.
The birth of the new South Africa, sparking a decision to host the 2009 DLF Indian Premier League tournament there, has enabled the Proteas to position themselves as an even more dominant force in teh cricket arena. This decision followed a meeting in Johannesburg today Cricket South Africa’s CEO, Gerald Majola, and Lalit Modi, Chairman and Commissioner of the IPL.
The Proteas team consists of Graeme Smith (Captain and opening batsman), AB de Villiers (best outfielder in both the Test and ODI sides), Albie Morkel (star batsman), Ashwell Prince (South Africa’s 8th Test captain), Dale Steyn (the world’s 2nd ranked Test bowler), Hashim Amla (who scored 1,100 runs by the close of the 2008 season), Herschelle Gibbs (the first South African to score 1 000 World Cup runs), Jacques Kallis (who scored 6 centuries in 12 Test matches), Jean-Paul Duminy (left-handed batsman and right-arm off spinner), Johan Botha (one of South Africa’s leading spin bowlers), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (right-handed batsman and left arm fast medium swing bowler), Makhaya Ntini (the 3rd South African bowler to take 300 Test wickets), Mark Boucher (successful wicket-keeper the first to complete 400 dismissals), Morne Morkel (member of the Castle Test and Standard Bank ODI squads), Neil McKenzie (right-hand batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler), and Paul Harris (nick-named “a breath of fresh air” by Cricket South Africa CEO, Gerald Majola)
