Cricket

Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2009 defines Cricket as “a high-scoring outdoor bat-and-ball game played between teams of 11 players that originated in England over 500 years ago”. This is by far a very simplistic definition if ever we heard one. Cricket is more than merely a “bat-and-ball game”. To some, Cricket is a religion. To the regions where it is played, it is revered as a major passion. To us, Cricket is an intriguing phenomenon; one that has captured the imagination of billions of people world-wide. Some record-holders and outstanding players have been bred out of this spectator’s sport, including the incomparable Australian cricketer, Sir Donald Bradman a.k.a. “The Don” who was referred to by Brett Hutchins in the Cambridge University Press as “the greatest achievement in any major sport”; Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as cricket’s best all-rounder having excelled in all the essential skills of batting, bowling, and fielding; and last, but most certainly not least, Sir Vivian Richards, former West Indies Captain who ruled the world as the sport’s best batsman for 10 years. But before we delve into the Giants of Cricket; let’s get a better understanding of the basics of the game, the Equipment used, how the game is played, and other elements to this fascinating sport.
