Sun City Resort and Casino
Hidden in the stark ruggedness of the bushveld, in the heart of an ancient volcano and bordered by the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and mountain range in the North West Province is the majestic Sun International resort and casino, Sun City. This captivating venue offers a world of mystery, intrigue and entertainment created by visionary Sol Kerzner. It truly is a place that will delight and astound you from start to finish with its unique African heartbeat and rhythm.
Sun City first opened in December 1979 in the then Bophuthatswana which was an independent state at the time. The location was primarily selected as casinos and topless revues were banned in South Africa under the apartheid regime, but with its proximity to both Johannesburg and Pretoria, the resort soon became a popular week-end destination.
In later years The Lost City was born along with The Palace of the Lost City. This part of the resort is a fantasy experience complete with Jungles, tropical gardens, hidden stream and waterfalls, not to mention the Valley of the Waves. According to legend, the Palace of the Lost City was built as the royal residence of an ancient civilisation of South Africa, but was destroyed by an earthquake. It has now been restored to its former glory and offers splendid accommodation in the most sumptuous surroundings in South Africa.
The resort has come a long way over the years yet remains one of South Africa’s premier entertainment destinations and as anyone who has ever visited Sun City can tell you, it doesn’t take any stretch of the imagination to see why.
